Salsa has a variety of different origins. Bits and pieces of Afro-Cuban, Puerto-Rican, and many other Latin styles have joined to form what is known today as Salsa or street salsa. Unlike Mambo, which is a style based on linear movement, Salsa is generally danced with rotation and turns.
Salsa also has many different subsets with their own names. This includes Cumbia (a style danced more side-to-side), Casino (a style altogether different from the Americanized street version), Salsa on 1, and Salsa on 2 (meaning a difference in where the accents are placed in time with the music). These are just a few of the dances that are often referred to as salsa but in truth have many cultural roots that make the steps as unique as the dialects of the language spoken from whence they came. In Cincinnati, the most common style found is Salsa on 1. The dance allows for a great blend of twists and turns characterized by rock steps and provides a great social setting to meet tons of new people.
